When you place it under your head, neck and shoulders, it disperses pressure avoiding any pinch points. Your shoulders and neck experience a deep release that transitions up toward the top of your skull.
Its shape is also perfect for releasing tension in hard-to-reach curves, and you can rest your face against the spikes for a subtle sensation.

Will it hurt? Yes. But only for a little in the beginning.
Each spike responds to tension in your body, so more tension = more sensation. The initial “Ouch!” you feel activates your body’s pain response and tells it to send happiness hormones and pain-relief chemicals to the area you’re targeting. If those spikes aren’t sharp enough – or you’re beyond relaxed already – you won’t feel much.

Can’t live without the premium level 3 pillow
Wow! I now have three shakti mat pillows…and I don’t know what I will do without them when working overseas for a few months later this year. Level 4 pillow
I had the Level 1 mat for over a year and just progressed to level 4. I simultaneously ordered the (level 4) pillow for the first time. It is intense… but absolutely not unbearable, and rather relaxing. I haven’t yet, but look forward to trying it as a pillow behind my back while working on the computer. I had ordered a level 2 which was not the intensity I needed. Shakti exchange my level 2 for a level 4 without any hassle.
