The most popular way to Shakti is in bed, before sleep. Lying down with the Mat under your back and shoulders is perfect, but you can use the Mat to target tension anywhere throughout your body.

Will it hurt? Yes. But only for a little in the beginning.
Each spike responds to tension in your body, so more tension = more sensation. The initial “Ouch!” you feel activates your body’s pain response and tells it to send happiness hormones and pain-relief chemicals to the area you’re targeting. If those spikes aren’t sharp enough – or you’re beyond relaxed already – you won’t feel much.
After a few minutes, the tingling sensation fades into a deep, relaxing warmth. The redness is purely a circulation boost. You might even fall asleep.
There are two things to consider when looking at intensities:

Addicted to my Shakti mat
I couldn’t believe how much I got out of this mat, from the first session. I’ve been struggling with pain and tense muscles, and my Pilates instructor recommended the mat. I suspect I have a high pain threshold, but from the first session I got that initial brief ouch -> mmm warm -> wow this feels incredible. It makes it easier to identify the tense muscles (often where you’re feeling the ouch!) and relax them.
I can be fidgety during meditation, but not with the Shakti mat. Because my body and mind has something to focus on, I find it much easier to be present and relax. It was only my third session when I fell asleep on my mat during meditation. Now I’m meditating first thing in the morning and before I go to bed every day. I really look forward to my time on the mat!
I’ve even found putting my Shakti mat on my footstool under my bare feet helps me focus while I’m at my desk! This might sound like an overly enthusiastic review, but I’m usually such a skeptic of alternative tools, but this really works for me.
I should also say the quality of the mat itself is really high. It’s probably shorter and narrower than I thought from the photos (the models are slight!) But it feels sturdy and has a satisfying weight and thickness to it. I also found the meditations on the app very good.
